Can strategy games really work on a phone?
Strategy games were built for big screens and quiet afternoons, so I was skeptical they'd translate to mobile. After spending time with Ironclad Frontier, I'm mostly convinced.
The trick is designing for interruption. Good mobile strategy expects you to stop mid-turn, so it saves state cleanly and lets you pick up without losing your thread.
Skirmish and puzzle modes help a lot. A tight 15-minute map fits a commute far better than a sprawling campaign, and it still delivers that satisfying 'aha' when a plan comes together.
So yes, they can work — but only when the developer respects that you're playing in bursts. The ones that just port a desktop experience wholesale tend to fall flat.
