In praise of slow adventure games
Some of my favorite mobile experiences have no enemies, no health bars, and no clock ticking down. Hollow Isle reminded me how much I value that kind of calm.
There's something special about a game that trusts you to explore. No arrows shoving you forward, no notification begging you back — just a world and your curiosity.
These games live or die on atmosphere. Sound, art, and pacing do the work that combat does elsewhere, and when it clicks, you get completely absorbed.
If you've been feeling burnt out on loud, busy games, try a slow adventure. Play it with headphones, in a quiet room, and let it breathe. It's a different kind of good.
